Arthur Cottage
Arthur Cottage, located in Cullybackey, is the ancestral home of Chester Alan Arthur, the 21st President of the United States of America. The cottage, a traditional 18th-century Irish farmhouse, belonged to Arthur's father, William Arthur, before the family emigrated to North America.
Chester Alan Arthur was born in 1829 in Vermont, USA, after his father left Ireland in 1815 due to economic hardship. William Arthur, a preacher, sought better opportunities for his family in the United States, where he continued his religious work.
Chester A. Arthur rose to political prominence after a successful career as a lawyer and later became Vice President under James Garfield.
Following Garfield's assassination in 1881, Arthur assumed the presidency and is remembered for advocating civil service reform. The Arthur Cottage stands today as a historical site, preserved to commemorate the President's Irish roots and the broader story of emigration from Ireland to America.
Visitors can explore the cottage and its surroundings, gaining insights into the life and times of the Arthur family before their journey to the New World.
